of a Journey in Palestine-Israel" by Michel Khleifi & Eyal
Sivan (2003)
Documentary - Arabic,
English & Hebrew with English sub-titles
Approx. Length: 270 mins.
(roughly 90 mins. each part)
PART I: The South
PART II: The Center
PART III: The North
Description:
Co-directed in the summer
of 2002 by Palestinian director Michel Khleifi and Israeli director
Eyal Sivan, Route 181 documents the pair’s travels from the
south to the north of Israel-Palestine, roughly following the borders
outlined in United Nations Resolution 181, adopted in 1947 to partition
Palestine into two states. They encounter Israelis and Palestinians
from all walks of life, filming them in their everyday lives. Each
of these characters individually evokes the frontiers that separate
them from their neighbours: military checkpoints, concrete, barbed
wire, cynicism, humour, indifference, suspicion, aggression. Described
by Variety as a “damning appraisal of Israel as an aggressor
within its own borders toward Arab residents,” Route 181 was
banned by Le Festival du Cinéma du Réel in France,
but has since received the support of many prominent arts and academic
figures, including filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard and philosopher Etienne
Balibar.
“An explosive documentary” —Télérama
